Changing Name of Town
The article about the Town of Tupper Lake linked to in the post below piqued my curiosity about the process for changing a town name in New York. There is remarkably little information to be found about it, but it appears that a special act of the Legislature is required. Here's the press release from the Governor's office when he signed the bill to change Altamont's name to Tupper Lake.

This seems to be an Adirondack-related phenomena, or more likely just my limited focus coming into play. The Town of Caldwell, containing the Village of Lake George, became epynomous quite some time ago (creating an out-of-order SWIS code forever irritating to OCD types working with real property data). The Town of Wilmington has held discussions on a fairly regularly basis over the past decade about changing the name to Whiteface, which is a geographic feature in the town and not a village. Both changes were for the same as the TL name change--broader appeal to visitors possibly confused by the layers of names.
